Brisbane Olympics 2032: Dates and Key Information

The 2032 Summer Olympics, also known as the Games of the XXXV Olympiad or simply Bris2032, are set to take place from 23 July to 8 August 2032.

Brisbane, Queensland, will be the main host city, marking Australia’s third time hosting the prestigious event.

The previous games were held in Melbourne (1956) and Sydney (2000).

The Selection of Brisbane as Host City

Brisbane was officially chosen to host the 2032 Olympics during the 138th International Olympic Committee (IOC) Session in Tokyo on 21 July 2021.

This was 11 years before the Games, giving the city the longest planning period in Olympic history.

Brisbane’s bid was the first to be approved under the new IOC bidding process, which encourages continuous dialogue with potential host cities.

The selection came after the IOC’s new bidding system, which replaced the traditional process.

Under this format, Brisbane’s bid received a solid vote from the IOC delegates, with 72 out of 80 votes in favour of the city hosting the Games.

Venues and Locations

The majority of the Olympic events will take place in three zones across South East Queensland:

Brisbane will be the main venue for the Games.

Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast will host several events.

Other football preliminaries will be held in Cairns, Townsville, and even Melbourne and Sydney, which previously hosted the Olympics.

The Games will see the construction of new venues like the Brisbane Live arena, set to host swimming and water polo events.

Other major upgrades will include renovations to The Gabba stadium and Lang Park.

Infrastructure and Developments

As the Games approach, Brisbane has been undergoing major infrastructure upgrades, including:

The Cross River Rail project, a new underground railway system, will be completed by 2029.

The Brisbane Metro bus rapid transit project, aimed at reducing congestion, will be ready by 2024.

Plans for a new athletes’ village in Hamilton are also underway.

These projects are expected to significantly boost transport and city infrastructure, with more developments scheduled to ensure the city is fully prepared for the Olympics.

Sports and Events

The 2032 Olympics will feature a mix of traditional and new sports. While the core events remain, new sports are being considered, including:

Baseball/Softball: After successful showings at previous Olympics, these sports are vying for inclusion.

Rugby League: There’s a push for Rugby League Nines and wheelchair rugby league.

Cricket: Cricket Australia is backing the inclusion of cricket, a major sport in Australia.

Other possible sports include netball, squash, and even breakdancing, which made its Olympic debut in 2024.

Broadcasting

The Olympics will be broadcast domestically by Nine Entertainment, which acquired the broadcasting rights for 2024 through 2032.

Internationally, the Games will be covered by networks like NBCUniversal in the US and Warner Bros. Discovery in Europe.

With all the excitement building up, Brisbane 2032 is shaping up to be a memorable event, with the city well on its way to hosting the Games in style.
